We asked our members for their memories of VE Day:
John (then aged 9)
"I lived in Essex. I helped build a bonfire with the debris from the bombed houses. My father had a shop and so he got us fireworks."
Val (then aged 13)
"I lived in Coventry and had been evacuated to my Gran in Staffordshire for some time due to the Blitz. I remember dancing in the street when we heard the war was over."
Stan (then aged 22)
"I was in Sydney on HMS Glory. The ship was there before going for a refit in the far east. The pubs were full. I had relatives in Sydney and shared the celebrations with them."
Joan (then aged 13)
I lived in Warwick. I remember I had to look after my younger sister as my Mother had too much to drink and was sick."
June (then aged 13)
I lived in Nottinghamshire with my Mum and Dad. We heard the news by "jungle telegraph". I can remember dancing on the lawn."
At Waverley we marked the 70th anniversary of VE Day with a special war time menu and celebration tea.
Staff and volunteers joined in too.
